Last Friday, Apple officially opened pre-orders for the iPhone Duo. Needless to say, it was a bloodbath. Despite Apple allowing customers to get ready for the pre-order in advance, many customers encountered various issues and errors, resulting in many seeing considerably later shipping estimates. Now, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman thinks that Apple made a mistake with the iPhone Duo pre-order.
iPhone Duo pre-order was a mistake
Why and how was the iPhone Duo pre-order a mistake? According to Gurman, he thinks Apple rushed into things. As you might have heard from previous reports, supply for the iPhone Duo is extremely tight. The global chip shortage and the manufacturing complexity of the phone resulted in the perfect storm.
But despite that, in Apple’s desire to get the phones into the hands of customers to satisfy investors, it created the situation we are in now, where some customers are seeing shipping estimates in January 2027.
According to Gurman, “Let me cut to the chase: Apple made a major mistake here. The company knew there would be severe supply constraints but went ahead with the launch anyway, apparently prioritizing a desire to get the device on the market early in its fiscal first quarter over satisfying demand. That will disappoint many of the early adopters most eager to buy it.”
What should Apple have done?
In an earlier report from Gurman, he said that Apple had initially planned to release the iPhone Duo in November. However, it seems their manufacturing partners managed to produce more units than expected, resulting in Apple bringing forward the release date of the phone.
From what we can surmise, Gurman thinks that Apple should have simply waited. If Apple had more units on hand, maybe the situation wouldn’t have been as bad. Also, there were reports that Apple initially planned on releasing the iPhone Duo in the US and China, but decided to release it globally (or mostly global). This meant that whatever limited inventory Apple had was spread even thinner.
Will this have a negative effect on the overall sales? That remains to be seen. But the upside to this is that those who missed out on the launch day release can now wait to read and watch reviews before deciding.
