Many of us who tried to pre-order an iPhone Duo on Friday found out we’ll be waiting months for our unit to arrive. So our backup plan was to try to snag one in-store on Friday, when the device starts shipping. But according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple is discouraging stores from selling them in-store. The reason? There are very few in stock.
Apple has also issued a statement to AppleInsider about this:
“The pre-order demand for iPhone Duo, our first foldable iPhone, has been nothing short of extraordinary. We are working hard to get this revolutionary new product into customers’ hands as quickly as possible, and we will continue accepting orders online. Our teams look forward to welcoming customers at Apple Stores worldwide to experience the iPhone Duo and the incredible full iPhone line-up for themselves.
Currently, pre-order ship dates are set for January 25, 2027; that’s a full three months after the release date. Which really shows just how much demand there is for the iPhone Duo.
This happens pretty often with new Apple products, and even with new versions, like the iPhone X and iPhone 12 Mini. So we expect Apple to pick up the slack and increase production, especially since the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max aren’t selling as well as they had hoped. Apple may shift some of the production from the iPhone 18 Pro models to the Duo.
Apple’s website still says to “check back for availability on 10/24” for in-store pickup
Despite this, Apple’s website still says to check back on October 24 for in-store pickup availability. This is leading many to think that we may get some in-store availability the day after pre-orders are picked up. I still expect stock to be very limited, however, on Saturday.
We will have to wait and see how this shakes out later this week. Hopefully they can clear the queue a bit, because waiting until 2027 for a $2,000 phone is pretty absurd.
