When the MacBook Neo name was first leaked, many were questioning whether or not this was the official name Apple chose. It sounded very un-Apple-like, given that the company typically has a more “serious” approach. But it turned out to be true. That being said, how did Apple land on this particular name?
How Apple chose the MacBook Neo name
Speaking to Lance Ulanoff from Tech Radar after the launch event, Colleen Novielli, Director, Mac Product Marketing at Apple, revealed how the company picked the MacBook Neo name. According to Novielli, “We wanted something that felt fun and friendly, and fresh, and felt like it really suited the spirit of this product.”
Prior to that, Ulanoff had his own theory on the name. His theory was that “Neo” had to do with colors, in particular neon colors, given that “Neo” is only one “n” short of “Neon.” We’re not sure if that’s what Apple was going for, but it’s a fun theory.
Many had speculated that Apple would just refer to the laptop as the “MacBook,” mimicking the 12-inch model that Apple launched and discontinued years ago. When Ulanoff brought it up, Novielli acknowledged those comparisons. However, she added, “I think some may draw parallels to the MacBook product that you’re referencing, but really, you know, MacBook Neo is an entirely new product that was, again, reimagined from the ground up.”
Ulanoff also cheekily asked if this Neo branding could be used for future ultra-affordable iPads or iPhones. However, Novielli said she couldn’t answer that.
In case you missed it
In case you missed the announcement of the MacBook Neo, this is Apple’s latest laptop. It is priced at $599, which in Apple’s universe is practically unheard of. Even the 12-inch MacBook launched back in 2015 at $1,299. With the MacBook Neo, you’re still getting an aluminum body laptop with a 13-inch display, except for just $599.
However, there are some shortcomings with this laptop. For starters, it only features 8GB of RAM. Secondly, it uses the A18 Pro chipset. This is the same chipset in the iPhone 16 Pro series, versus the M-series Apple typically uses for its Mac computers. Battery life is impressive, with Apple advertising up to 16 hours.
But given its specs, it’s clearly not designed for pro users in mind. At its price point, this is a great laptop for students or users who need something cheap and simple.
