After introducing the new Fire TV Stick 4K and simplifying its streaming device lineup, Amazon has refreshed its Kindle lineup with updated versions of the Kindle, Kindle Paperwhite, and Kindle Colorsoft. They all come in new designs and colors. All models now feature a flush-front display with colors, replacing the recessed screen on the entry-level Kindle.
Amazon’s new Kindle features a slimmer design and faster performance
The tech giant says the new Kindle is the “most pocket-sized” Kindle it has ever made, featuring a 6-inch display. It measures 6.8mm in thickness, a full millimeter thinner than its predecessor, and weighs just 140 grams. The device is apparently 30% faster when opening books than the previous-gen entry-level e-reader. It offers 16GB of storage and is claimed to last for six weeks on a single charge.
The price of the basic Kindle starts at $149.99 for the 16GB model with lockscreen ads. It will be available in Ube and Graphite shades. Meanwhile, the 16GB model without ads costs $169.99. Amazon is also offering an aluminum variant for $189.99, which comes with 32GB of storage and no ads.
The aluminum version has a more premium feel but is 20 grams heavier than the standard model. It will be available in Alpine Sky Aluminum and Seaglass Green Aluminum.
The Amazon Kindle Paperwhite is thinner and lighter than before
Then we have the new Amazon Kindle Paperwhite. It is claimed to be thinner and lighter than before. The device can offer up to 12 weeks of battery life on a single charge. The new Kindle Paperwhite has a 7-inch display. Amazon notes that it has the highest contrast ratio among all its Paperwhites. This should make reading under bright sunlight much easier.
There’s 16GB of storage. It is waterproof and comes with an adjustable warm light. The new Paperwhite will set you back $199.99. At $249.99, you get the new Paperwhite Signature Edition. This comes with an aluminum back and 32GB storage. It also features auto-adjusting lights and lets you double-tap to turn pages. It will be available in Graphite and Seaglass Green.
Lastly, there’s the new Kindle Colorsoft. Amazon says it has redesigned its display so it offers edge-to-edge color to improve clarity. It is also thinner and lighter, and features a 7-inch display. The 16GB model costs $289.99 and will be available in Graphite. The Signature Edition has an aluminum body, 32GB of storage, auto-adjusting front light, dock charging, and double-tap to turn page capability. This will be available in Graphite and Fig shades and costs $319.99.
Kids versions
It’s worth noting that all three Kindle devices will have new kids versions. These will come with child-friendly covers and a subscription to Amazon Kids+, with prices starting at $179.99. The entry-level Kindle (along with its aluminum version) is available starting today in the US, Canada, Mexico, Brazil, the UK, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Ireland, the Netherlands, Belgium, Sweden, Poland, Japan, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Egypt, and Australia.
Meanwhile, the Kindle Paperwhite and Kindle Colorsoft will be available for pre-order across the same regions.
