It has been a couple of years since Amazon first announced the Echo Hub. This means that it is actually due for a refresh, and the good news is that it might not be too far behind. This is because according to a recent FCC sighting, Amazon might have a new Echo Hub in the works.
FCC listing reveals potentially new Amazon Echo Hub
According to an Android Police report, there was an FCC filing on September 15 that points towards a new Amazon Echo Hub device. The FCC listing obviously doesn’t mention that it’s the Echo Hub or tells us its specs, but there are enough clues for us to make a somewhat educated guess.
The listing is for an “Electronic Display Device” and has the model number H4P25L. It also shows support for Bluetooth, Bluetooth LE, along with WiFi 2.4GHz and WiFi 5GHz. There’s also a general RF exposure report. This basically requires the device to remain at least 20cm away from people during operation.
According to Android Police, there is a chance it could be a new Kindle. However, the WiFi output is different from previous Kindle-related filings. This led the publication to believe it could be for a device meant to stay in one spot, like the Echo Hub. Plus, the fact that it has been 2-3 years since the device was launched, a refresh is definitely in the cards. It’s really only a matter of when.
What is the Echo Hub?
Amazon is no stranger to smart displays. Some of you might recall that the company previously launched the Echo Show. So what makes the Echo Hub different is that this is Amazon’s first device dedicated to smart home controls.
Unlike the Echo Show, which might be used more for entertainment purposes, the Echo Hub is designed to be wall-mounted. This gives users a, well, hub, to control all their smart home devices and gadgets. It’s like a centralized switch and control panel for all things smart home related.
While our smartphones, tablets, and even smart speakers already offer smart home control, the Hub is more like a dedicated unit. This makes it convenient if you don’t have your phone on you. The original Echo Hub launched at $179. Hopefully despite all the ongoing memory crunch that Amazon will be able to maintain those prices.
