With smart glasses getting more and more popular, largely thanks to Meta’s popular Ray-Bans and soon Google’s Android XR glasses, lawmakers are taking notice and looking to see what can be done to protect people’s privacy.
A new bill has been proposed in Pennsylvania, House Bill 2603, which says that all wearable devices capable of recording footage will be required to display an indicator when doing so. That’s not too crazy, considering Meta already makes this a feature on its glasses and will not allow you to turn it off. The same goes for the upcoming Google and Samsung glasses.
Though, where things get tricky is the aftermarket mods that are disabling those LEDs. Which Meta, to its credit, has been quickly taking down from Facebook Marketplace.
However, this bill is not just going after smart glasses like those from Meta and Samsung. They are also going after anything that can be worn and record video. Like the DJI Osmo Nano or the Insta360 Go Ultra, which are tiny cameras that you can wear on your hat, hang around your neck, or even attach to a backpack.
This could go nationwide
While this specific bill was brought up in the Pennsylvania House, it could end up coming to the US House or Senate soon, too. Or something similar. As more and more smart glasses come out, with smaller and smaller cameras, it’s going to be necessary to have an LED indicator when recording.
So far, every pair of smart glasses we’ve demoed and have seen rumored does have an LED indicator that cannot be turned off without any modifications. So, this isn’t a huge deal yet. But the government is known for overreacting, so we’ll have to wait and see what happens in the future.
There’s a lot of smart glasses coming in the next few months, with Samsung/Google launching a bevy of different styles this Fall.
