T-Mobile is reportedly losing its biggest advantage in the US wireless market as its rivals improve their offerings and narrow the gap that once separated the carriers. The company built its reputation by offering lower prices, strong 5G service, and a customer-friendly approach, but some of those advantages are now fading. The latest research says T-Mobile may no longer have the clear edge it once enjoyed.
T-Mobile is losing its biggest advantage as rivals offer better plans and connectivity
One of the analysts at Wolfe Research, Peter Supino, says T-Mobile’s revenue growth may slow as AT&T and Verizon become more competitive. The carrier that was once seen as aggressive and consumer-friendly is slowly losing its charm. Its attractive prices and focused 5G strategy helped it win consumers’ trust. The image helped the brand drive years of strong growth, but the approach was not easy to sustain financially.
Now, AT&T and Verizon are offering better postpaid plans. Consumers who want to control their monthly bills are porting to them. Moreover, cable companies are also using lower prices and attractive phone deals to pull customers away from traditional carriers. On the other hand, T-Mobile has few options to improve revenue growth. Many of its customers have already opted for higher-priced plans, leaving less room for further increases.
Wolfe Research expects AT&T and Verizon to grow faster and potentially reach T-Mobile’s growth rate over the next four years.
Things aren’t going well for T-Mobile
T-Mobile is undergoing major leadership changes, including the departures of Mike Katz, Callie Field, Ulf Ewaldsson, and former CEO Mike Sievert. At the same time, there is speculation about a merger with parent company Deutsche Telekom, which has added to the uncertainty.
Regardless of its current conditions, T-Mobile still has a clear advantage. Its network remains better than other US rivals even if the gap continues to become narrower. It is also investing actively in spectrum, acquisitions, and new technology. Those efforts could help protect its position and explain why many longtime customers have stayed despite recent price increases.
Last but not least, the CEO Srini Gopalan said the management is putting more money into the network as they look to maintain T-Mobile’s lead.
