Controller remapping is an excellent feature for any platform to support because it lets players play the games they love how they want to play them, and Android 17 is going to bring that functionality to player around the world. Google is finally taking mobile gaming more serious by adding this capability.
To be clear, controller remapping has been available on Android in a number of ways for several years. However, Android has never natively supported this feature. Android 17 will change all that. With its arrival, you’ll be able to dig into the settings and configure game controls however you like. No need for a third-party app, and no need for a special gaming phone that has these controls baked in through the manufacturer’s own software layer.
Android 17 will add native controller remapping options to the platform
If you have a controller like the Razer Kishi V3, then you can simply remap the controls using Razer’s dedicated app. Phones like the ASUS ROG Phone series and devices from REDMAGIC also have built-in controller remapping functions. Now Android 17 will support this feature natively. As noted by Mishaal Rahman, controller remapping functions will be available in the settings menu.
From there, you can tweak and adjust the controls to your liking. Not only that, but it will work for both wired controllers and Bluetooth controllers. Mobile game controllers that plug into your phone using USB-C are technically wired, as they’re connecting through a direct connection. So you can use these, as well as any that connect wirelessly. This kind of versatility will be a huge boon for gamers. Because it gives them choice and it’s less limiting.
In terms of remapping options, you can remap basically anything. This feature add should also make it much easier for people with impaired movement to play games more comfortably thanks to the increased accessibility.
