Last month, the Sony Xperia 1 VIII surfaced in CAD-based renders, revealing its design. Now, we get some more information about the phone, thanks to a new report, while a listing of the device also appeared on Amazon.
Let’s focus on the camera-related info first, shall we? The Xperia 1 VIII popped up at an online store. This info should be taken with a grain of salt, but it’s worth noting nonetheless. Out of the shared camera features, the biggest surprise comes from the telephoto camera.
Sony is planning to ditch a beloved Xperia 1 VIII telephoto camera feature, but for a good reason
Sony will ditch the Xperia 1 VII’s telephoto camera with adjustable focal length (85mm-170mm), which enabled 3.5x to 7x zoom on the phone. Why is Sony doing this? Well, it’s planning to use a larger sensor, it seems.
The new sensor will come with a fixed focal length of 70mm, for a 3x zoom. Sony is replacing a 12-megapixel 1/3.5-inch sensor size, which is very small, with a 48-megapixel 1/1.56-inch sensor size.
This is a worthy change, in our eyes, as the new sensor is a major upgrade. The difference in size is night and day, and needless to say, that’s very important. The new sensor could actually compete with the best out there if Sony does its job properly in terms of image processing.
When it comes to main and ultrawide cameras, all we know is that Sony is planning to use a 24mm focal length on the main camera, and a 16mm focal length on the ultrawide unit… same as before.
June 26 release date has been mentioned
On a related note, the Sony Xperia 1 VIII also popped up on Amazon UK and Amazon Germany. The listing actually mentions June 26 as the release date, while it also shared some specs of the device.
It is mentioned that the phone will feature a 6.5-inch 120Hz OLED display, along with a new telephoto lens. The display aspect ratio is 19.5:9 with a fullHD+ resolution.
Xperia AI is also mentioned in the listing, as is a 3.5mm headphone jack. The phone will offer two SIM card slots, and a 2-day battery life is noted as well. The Sony Xperia 1 VIII will seemingly be available in Graphite Black, Iolite Silver, and Garnet Red colors.
