It seems YouTube TV subscribers are hit with a bizarre low-volume issue, especially with NBC network stations. The issue is reportedly lowering the volume and reducing the audio quality of local TV broadcasts and national programming. It appears to be specifically affecting NBC-affiliated stations. Going by the user complaints, the problem isn’t limited to a particular area in the US. It seems to be widespread, spanning across the country.
YouTube TV subscribers report low-volume issues, especially with NBC shows
Affected subscribers report that audio output from NBC affiliate channels is nearly half the level of other channels. This is forcing them to raise the volume significantly on their TVs or sound systems. Undoubtedly, this is an inconvenient viewing experience, especially for those who rely on YouTube TV as their primary source of live television.
Interestingly, one user on Reddit goes on to claim that NBC has stopped sending 5.1 surround sound audio to YouTube TV. The user adds that YouTube TV still “wraps the (stereo PCM) audio in a 5.1 AC3 wrapper with surround metadata.” They suggest that the absence of the multi-channel audio format may be leading to a downmixing to stereo, which could be leading to the lower volume and audio quality issues.
The problem is on the provider’s side
Changing the audio settings on the service side or device configurations apparently doesn’t seem to be fixing the audio issue. This clearly suggests that the problem is on the provider’s side, not the user’s device. The issue comes at a time when viewers tune in for key programming, like national news updates and other entertainment specials. This is not a very good look on YouTube TV.
Google has yet to comment or acknowledge the YouTube TV low-volume issue. We hope there’s a fix to this soon. It can be very annoying to raise/lower volume levels constantly while watching.
