Android has never quite managed to capture the living room gaming market. However, Google might be preparing a clever workaround to make couch gaming a little easier. Instead of asking you to buy dedicated hardware, the company looks ready to turn the smartphone already sitting in your hand into a virtual game controller on Google TV devices.
An APK teardown of the Google TV app by Android Authority revealed new code strings and settings tied to a dedicated gamepad mode. While the app already lets you use your phone screen as a directional remote to navigate streaming apps, this new addition specifically prepares the layout for interacting with games on your TV.
Adapting mobile controls for the big screen
This concept is not entirely out of nowhere. Google recently introduced a similar virtual gamepad layout for foldable phones in Android 17. This allows players to use the lower half of an unfolded screen as a touch controller. Translating that same interface to Google TV seems like a natural next step, except the gameplay action happens on your television display rather than your phone screen.
It’s noteworthy that some third-party apps have offered phone-to-TV control schemes for years. However, baking this feature directly into the official Google TV app gives Android TV gaming a native, standardized option. It removes the friction of pairing extra Bluetooth controllers just to play quick arcade titles or casual family games.
Convenience over competitive precision
Using a glass touchscreen as a gamepad does come with obvious trade-offs. Without physical buttons or tactile feedback, it can be a little tricky to keep your thumb in the right spot while your eyes are locked on the TV screen during fast-paced action.
Additionally, entry-level Google TV dongles still feature modest processing hardware, meaning high-end gaming remains out of reach. Still, lowering the barrier to entry for casual titles is a step in the right direction. Google has not officially announced when this phone gamepad mode will roll out, but the code hints that a formal launch could be approaching soon.
