TikTok has a watch history feature where you can see the videos you’ve watched in case you want to rewatch them again later but forgot to save them. Then last year, Instagram launched a similar feature for Reels. Now, it looks like X is getting a History feature too.
X gets new History feature
According to a post on X by Nikita Bier, X’s head of product, the company is introducing a History feature that lets you keep track of content you’ve interacted with. This private hub will let you see posts that you’ve bookmarked, long videos, articles, and likes. This means that users can always go back and see content that they’ve viewed or saved from one location.
That being said, it should be noted that this feature is only available on the iOS version of the app. However, we expect that it will eventually make its way onto the Android app in the future. According to Bier, “The Timeline moves fast, so we hope this creates a better place for catching up on long-form content.”
For those who have been using the app for a while, you might notice that this History feature has replaced the old Bookmarks button. It also separates saved content into different categories. This will make it easier for users to find their saved content, instead of scrolling through a jumbled mix. Another thing worth noting is that this is all private. So you’re free to save and bookmark all the content you want without other people seeing it.
More than just a UI update?
On the surface, it might look like a mere UI update. To a certain extent, that is true, but TechCrunch thinks it could be something more, something longer-term. X, formerly known as Twitter, was a place for users to post short updates. It was never intended for long-form content.
However, that has changed in recent years. X has been trying to push the long-form article format, which is a useful feature for writers and businesses to share longer-form content. With this History feature, users on X can track their favorite articles or articles they saved but haven’t read yet.
This could very well position the company as a potential competitor against the likes of Substack and Medium. Whether or not it’ll pay off in the long run remains to be seen. But for the more immediate future, it’s still a useful update.
