Xbox could be making a return to exclusive games as new reports claim that the company is having some “serious internal discussions” about getting back to form. Over the past decade, the Xbox platform has made some big changes to how it operates. Where it once participated in the console-exclusive nature of game releases, Xbox slowly transitioned to offering games on its Xbox Game Pass service on day one, a service which it now offers on several different pieces of hardware.
Xbox has also now starting to commit to bringing some of its games to other hardware, such as PlayStation, with releases like Forza Horizon 5 topping sales charts. Now, it seems that Microsoft is starting to rethink its strategy, and is reportedly considering whether to move back more towards exclusive game releases.
Xbox could return to launching exclusive games to sell hardware
First and foremost, it needs to be clear that none of this information is official. As of right now this is merely all speculation, but it does come from Windows Central’s Jez Corden, who is generally tapped in when it comes to the Xbox platform. According to Corden, Microsoft is having internal discussions with serious consideration about exclusive games.
It’s also said to be discussing the nature of Game Pass, with new Xbox head Asha Sharma focusing on the high price of Game Pass and the successful Xbox 360 era. Sharma has already stated recently that she wants to bring back the success of the Xbox brand. These changes, however they take shape, could be part of that new strategy.
This would be a big departure from the way Xbox has done things the past several years. That being said, console-exclusives help ship hardware, and that might be what Xbox needs. What’s unclear is if this shift back to exclusives would include holding some titles back from a PC release. Currently, any Xbox console game is also available on PC. Sure, Microsoft owns both, but if it wants to sell more Xbox consoles, it might need to make more games console-exclusive to drive those sales. Whether or not that happens is also unclear, given the current state of console pricing. Especially when you factor in that the next Xbox is supposed to be a high-end PC.
