Many brands offer in-flight Wi-Fi services with promised high-speed network speeds. However, the real-world performance falls short for most travellers. To fill that gap, Amazon Leo has launched a new aviation antenna, which is capable of delivering up to 1Gbps download speed and up to 400Mbps upload.
The latest Amazon Leo aviation antenna can deliver up to 1Gbps download speeds
The newly announced Amazon Leo aviation antenna is part of the company’s satellite program, which was earlier known as Project Kuiper. The antenna flaunts a slim and lightweight design and is specifically built for commercial aircraft. It measures only 2.6 inches in terms of height. It uses a phased array system that operates without parts. This can reduce maintenance demands and could improve efficiency in long runs.
As said earlier, the antenna is capable of delivering up to 1Gbps download speeds and up to 400Mbps upload. If implemented well, the travelers could finally experience an in-flight internet connection that is no less than the Wi-Fi present at their homes. To enable seamless and fast connectivity, the device utilizes AWS infrastructure and a wide range of ground stations.
Several airlines have already shown interest
While the technical capabilities of the gadget are surely impressive, what really matters is how airlines implement it on their aircraft. Thankfully, airlines such as Delta Air Lines and JetBlue Airways have already shown interest. More airlines are expected to adopt the high-speed antenna in order to improve the service experience.
Amazon still has fewer satellites in orbit compared to its main competitor, SpaceX. However, it focuses more on coverage efficiency. The system uses inter-satellite links to pass data across regions without relying entirely on ground stations, which could improve service on remote routes, including over oceans and polar areas. The following technique may finally help close long-standing connectivity gaps that have limited in-flight internet reliability.
