Xbox Cloud Gaming as part of the Xbox Game Pass service has had its limits over the years, and now it’s going to add one more to the list with actual time limits that players will have each month. On September 3, Microsoft announced that it will be implementing monthly time limits for cloud gaming for Xbox Game Pass subscribers in the near future.
It has yet to announce exactly when these changes would actually take affect. There will be pricing changes as well, but not for the actually monthly cost of the Game Pass subscription tiers, which Microsoft recently changed earlier this year after Asha Sharma took over as the new head of Xbox. Instead, Microsoft will be adding the ability to pay for more cloud gaming time if you happen to run out of your monthly limit, just like you get when you run over your limit of monthly data with your cell service and may need to purchase more. So far, there have been no confirmations on what the additional play time will cost.

Xbox Cloud Gaming limits will vary based on the subscription tier
Microsoft is splitting limits up by tier, with Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscribers getting the most play time via cloud gaming every month. If you subscriber to the Ultimate tier, you’ll get 15 monthly hours of cloud gaming. Meanwhile, Premium subscribers will get access to 10 monthly hours, and Essential subscribers will have access to 5 monthly hours.
Microsoft says that it knows this will be a “meaningful change,” which is why it’s adding the ability to buy more time. It also says that it expects that this change will only impact about 4% of cloud gaming users, implying that most of its Game Pass subscribers who sometimes play games in the cloud do so under these limits on a monthly basis.
Outside of Xbox Game Pass, Microsoft is also making it possible to purchase cloud gaming time as a standalone purchase for non-Game Pass members. The company hasn’t shared prices on this either, noting that it will share those details before the changes happen.
