Microsoft is rolling out a fresh performance update aimed at making Windows 11 feel noticeably snappier across everyday tasks. The company promises up to a 20% boost in overall system responsiveness, with specific memory tweaks designed to give budget PCs with 8GB of RAM some much-needed breathing room.
Speeding up everyday desktop tools
According to a blog post by Navjot Virk, corporate vice president for Windows experiences, the performance push targets the core tools people use every single day. Microsoft tested response times on the new build 26300.9550 against older software. The firm noted faster load times when opening the Start menu, browsing File Explorer, searching the system, tweaking Settings, or pulling up right-click context menus.
Besides speed tweaks, the update packs a few handy extras like a refreshed Photos app, faster Bluetooth pairing for AirPods, side-positioning options for the taskbar, and precompiled shader delivery to cut down game loading screens in titles like Forza Horizon 6.
Giving 8GB RAM laptops room to breathe
The biggest technical shift targets low-memory systems that usually choke during heavy multitasking. Windows 11 can now hold up to 2GB more active data directly inside system RAM rather than dumping it onto slower storage drives. That keeps your open browser tabs and background tools responsive when toggling back and forth between apps.
On top of that, Windows no longer preloads the Widgets board in the background on machines with 8GB of RAM or less. That single change frees up over 200MB of memory right out of the gate, fulfilling a promise made earlier this year by Windows chief Pavan Davuluri to trim down the operating system’s heavy footprint.
Global chip shortages keep budget PCs alive
Microsoft’s sudden obsession with optimizing 8GB machines comes down to market reality rather than pure generosity. A massive global DRAM shortage caused by the AI data center boom has sent memory prices soaring, forcing PC makers to keep selling 8GB laptops to keep sticker prices reasonable.
While these updates prevent Windows 11 from crawling during basic web browsing and office work, 8GB still hits a wall if you edit 4K video or run local AI models. Even so, for millions of users relying on budget laptops, a lighter operating system is a very welcome upgrade.
