One of the biggest questions on everyone’s mind regarding the iPhone Duo is how durable is the hinge and the crease? Way before the official announcement, there were rumors that one of the reasons Apple held off on launching the device was because they were working on the hinge design to get it as crease-free as possible. Now, thanks to a review by the folks at Mediastorm, they put the iPhone Duo through 10,000 folds to see how it holds up.
iPhone Duo undergoes 10,000 folds
In the video, Tim from Mediastorm initially tried folding the iPhone Duo by hand about 500 times. Just from that, he said that the crease already appears to be more obvious. However, he notes that when you’re actually using the phone it’s not noticeable, but when the display is turned off and viewed at an angle, you can see a slight difference.
Obviously he wasn’t planning on sitting there folding the phone for another 10,000 times, so he put it in a machine that put the iPhone Duo through 10,000 folds. And the result? The crease on the display has deepened considerably where it is immediately more obvious. However, the good news is that the hinge itself still remains smooth to operate.
This more or less lines up with another test by Joanna Stern, in which she folded the iPhone Duo more than 30,000 times. While Stern did not say anything about the crease, she did confirm that the hinge still feels great.
How big of a deal is this?
Now obviously the crease deepening over time is normal and to be expected. That’s just physics due to material fatigue. However, it’s worth noting that these types of rapid stress tests aren’t necessarily indicative of real world usage. This means that in real-life, the iPhone Duo could survive more than 10,000 folds before its crease becomes more obvious.
However, the opposite could also be true, in which it might actually take less folds before the crease starts becoming noticeable. All this is to say that if you are planning on buying a foldable, don’t worry about the crease too much. Whether you like it or not, it’s there. Until material science catches up and we can commercially produce a material that develops no crease, that’s something that all foldable users have to live with.
Plus, Apple does offer replacement covers for the nanotexture screen. It costs $19 with AppleCare+ or $40 out of warranty.
