Artificial intelligence is quietly shifting from simple chat windows into tools that actually reach out to you first. Anthropic just introduced Claude Duet, a standalone AI agent app designed to take over your daily workload and keep tabs on your connected software. Built on Anthropic’s flagship Opus 5.5 model, Duet jumps straight into a heated race against rival proactive assistants like Meta’s Muse and OpenAI’s Dots.
Proactive updates and background virtual machines
Instead of waiting for you to type a prompt, Claude Duet runs in the background on its own virtual machine with a dedicated web browser. The agent sends a quick morning debrief covering your most important tasks, then checks your apps every few hours to flag anything needing your attention. It can handle basic admin chores, build web apps, track financial forecasts, and schedule team meetings without needing constant supervision.
To handle real work, Duet connects with more than 6,000 tools through the Claude Marketplace, including Gmail, Slack, Shopify’s Shop Pay, and Stripe’s Link digital wallet. Because letting an AI read your emails and handle payments comes with obvious risks, Anthropic built strict safety guardrails directly into the system. Duet never sees your account passwords and always asks for explicit human approval before sending messages, signing documents, completing payments, or deleting files.
Workplace focus versus consumer errands
Anthropic built Duet specifically for freelancers, founders, and small business owners overwhelmed by endless admin work. The company openly acknowledged that while Duet handles work tasks smoothly, it struggles with personal errands like booking flights or buying concert tickets. That business-first focus contrasts with Meta’s consumer-friendly Muse agent, which recently crossed 10 million users across the US and Canada according to company data reported by Reuters.
Research preview rollout and access limits
Right now, Anthropic is offering Claude Duet as a waitlisted research preview for paid Pro and Max subscribers in the US. You can access the agent through its web portal or standalone mobile apps on Android and iOS. Anthropic confirmed that Duet shares your existing subscription limits, meaning background app checks and automated tasks will count against your monthly Claude usage allowance.
