US President Donald Trump is claiming that Apple has finalized a deal with Intel to design and manufacture chips in the United States. That would be a huge move for Apple, not only because it would move its chip manufacturing to the US, but also because it would change the Foundry Apple uses. Currently, Apple (and almost everyone else in the world) uses TSMC for all of its chips. From the iPhone to Mac. So this is much bigger than just moving to the US.
Reports had come out in recent months saying that the two companies were working on a deal, but the President just tweeted it out instead.
Back in May, Apple Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo had said that Intel would be testing production for Apple processors throughout 2026 before starting the actual production and delivery next year. If this deal is actually accurate, it would mean that Intel would manufacture chips for the iPhone and Mac at its fabs in Oregon, Arizona, and Ohio.
It’s important to note that Intel is likely only getting a small sliver of Apple’s chip manufacturing. TSMC is still handling the majority of its chip manufacturing. And this really comes down to just how big Apple is and how much scale they’d need.
Intel is likely only producing chips for US iPhones and Macs
Similar to a lot of companies making phones for India in India, this is likely what Apple is doing here with this deal with Intel. Intel would make the chips that Apple will use in the iPhone models for the US (Macs too). Which is still a pretty large sliver of the pie for Intel. According to the latest reports, Apple sells around 60 million iPhones in the US each year.
We’ll still have to wait for Apple and Intel to announce it officially, but it does look very likely to be happening.
