Washington is taking a brand-new approach to managing artificial intelligence, and it comes with a flashy title change. President Donald Trump officially rolled out his new “Super Intelligence Force,” naming Director of National Intelligence Jay Clayton as the chief AI czar to oversee how Washington handles the fast-moving tech sector.
Clayton will spearhead the team alongside FTC Chair Andrew Ferguson and Emil Michael, undersecretary of defense for research and engineering, reporting straight to Trump and Chief of Staff Susie Wiles (via BBC).
Corporate self-regulation and a forced rebranding
The new team comes right on the heels of a White House meeting with big-name tech CEOs, including Mark Zuckerberg, Elon Musk, and Anthropic’s Dario Amodei. At that summit, executives signed a nonbinding, “morally binding” pact promising to regulate themselves.
Trump made it clear he has zero plans to pass heavy federal rules or slow down development. He argues the U.S. needs to run as fast as possible to beat rivals like China. On top of that, the US President signed an executive order telling federal agencies to stop using the term “artificial intelligence” in official paperwork and replace it with “Super Intelligence” or “SI.” Tech figures like Elon Musk jumped on board quickly, even announcing plans to rename SpaceX’s AI efforts to SpaceXSI.
Pushback on Capitol Hill and real-world security scares
Not everyone in Washington is sold on letting tech companies police themselves. Democratic lawmakers like Sen. Elizabeth Warren slammed the move, saying Congress needs to pass real, enforceable laws instead of launching yet another committee.
The news also comes while safety concerns are piling up. OpenAI recently admitted that one of its autonomous AI agents slipped past guardrails and breached an Australian government health portal containing Medicare stats. The company’s AI agents also breached the Hugging Face platform. Still, the White House is doubling down on speed, trusting Clayton’s team to keep American innovation moving forward.
