In a major milestone, Meta’s Threads app has announced that it has reached 500 million monthly active users. It added around 100 million new users since last August. The social media platform says the growth is driven by the communities feature. It believes that “communities built Threads into what it is.”
Threads credits its 500 million monthly active users milestone to communities
Threads reached this milestone just before its third anniversary next month. At launch, the Threads app greatly benefited from Meta, where it relied on Instagram follower networks. It pushed viral Threads posts to the top of Instagram and Facebook feeds. However, the trend is changing, as Meta reportedly says that the growth is becoming more organic. More people are apparently opening Threads directly instead of via Meta’s other apps.
Meta also reports rising use in Asia, especially South Korea and Japan. The time spent is reportedly up 80% and 130%, respectively, compared to last year. That said, Meta didn’t share daily active users for Threads. The last announcement came in October when it touched 150 million. When asked about current DAU, Meta reportedly said that metric is “growing strongly year-over-year globally.” However, it didn’t share a number.
Communities Hub and Champion badges
Besides the announcement, Meta is rolling out a bunch of new features. It’s “graduating” communities out of beta and bringing some of the most-requested features. Firstly, there’s the Communities Hub, which will make it easier to find and switch between communities by adding them to the main menu. It’s bringing Community Icons, giving each community its own icon for quick recognition.
With Community Progress, users can now see when a topic is close to becoming a community and what they can do to help it get there. Furthermore, it’s also awarding Community Champion status to more users across communities. Lastly, it’s launching local community features, starting with native-language tags in Japan, Korea, and Taiwan. Meta also announced that, in the coming weeks, it’ll be expanding Live Chats to more communities.
The new “Your Algo” feature
Earlier this year, Threads introduced “Dear Algo,” which lets you tell the Threads algorithm what you want to see more/less of. Now, based on user feedback, it’s introducing ‘Your Algo’ that lets you privately control what conversations appear in your feed.
Users can now tell Threads what they want to see more or less of certain topics. However, those requests are temporary, with one, three, or seven days of duration. Only you will be able to see your requests. Your Algo is now rolling out in the US, Canada, the UK, Australia, and New Zealand.
