As many of you know by now, the Galaxy Z Fold 8, Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra, and some other smartphones from Samsung can capture 24MP images, despite the fact that, by default, 12MP image output is set.
You can manually choose 24MP images instead. The thing is, users noticed that the phones don’t always abide by that setting. Needless to say, that’s very odd. Well, Samsung offered an explanation of why that is.
Your Galaxy Z Fold 8 reverts to 12MP images for a reason, Samsung explained why
These phones, including the Galaxy S26 Ultra, by the way, tend to default back to 12MP on their own at times. Samsung confirmed that this is not a bug; it’s intentional behavior.
The company says that, under certain circumstances, the phones revert to a 12MP mode. The company said that heat can push them to do so. A 24MP mode gets deactivated the moment the phone’s body temperature reaches 45°C.
This behavior is made to prevent the phones from overheating, as processing higher-res photos requires more processing power, which leads to more heat. Samsung was talking about the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra, but the behavior applies to other phones that offer this mode.
Now, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 series was announced during the summer, not long ago. So, it’s not exactly surprising that people started noticing this problem. It turns out it’s not a bug.
Heat is not the only reason, though
That’s not the only scenario in which the phones will decrease resolution, though. When you’re using digital zoom in very dark environments, it can also get reduced. The same goes for when you’re using an LED flash in macro mode, or in burst mode.
Samsung made all this work this way for a reason. Avoiding overheating is only one reason, though; others include providing better images.
