The removal of disc-based games and movement toward an entirely digital future doesn’t include the Xbox platform, yet, but Xbox has now just confirmed its new Disc to Digital feature for Xbox console owners. The news comes months after Sony announced it would be stopping production of discs for physical games on the PlayStation platform in 2028.
This has sent many gamers into a frenzy that has resulted in “No Disc, No Buy” comments being left on nearly all of Sony’s official PlayStation social channel posts that allow comments. It has also spurred some gamers to decide on swapping to playing games on PC and avoid buying future PlayStation games or consoles. Earlier this month, Sony also highlighted its digital games policy, reminding players that digital game purchases are for a license to use the software, and not to own the game. Much of the backlash has been a result of Sony offering no clear path to support disc games in an all-digital ecosystem. Microsoft is offering gamers a different approach.
The Disc to Digital feature on Xbox will let you play your games anywhere
The ability to digitize your Xbox games is with this new feature is what Microsoft says will bring the digital benefits to physical games, and it includes things like being able to play them anywhere whether that be on the Xbox console itself, in the cloud with Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, or on PC through the Xbox app.
The method involves placing your game disc into the Xbox console which Microsoft says immediately grants you the digital license for that game. The disc will also continue to work just as it always has, it’s just that players then have a digital license for the game as well.
Microsoft is beginning to test this feature with Xbox Insiders starting on August 31.
