Apps on the Play Store that have been sunset, that is, an app that is no longer getting updates and will stay in its current state, can be a bit dangerous to use. With no future updates, they run the risk of being exposed to potential security flaws that could put your data at risk or worse. The problem is that it’s easy to miss these kinds of Android apps because unless you’re paying attention to every single update for every app, you may not know that one hasn’t been updated in quite some time.
That’s where a new potential upcoming feature comes in. A feature that would probably help keep your devices safer if Google actually ends up releasing it. And by all accounts, it looks like Google is probably going to.
A new potential Play Store feature may warn users that an app has been sunset
It’s worth noting that this isn’t a guaranteed feature just yet. So as useful as it might sound, it could never be pushed out to users. With that out of the way, an Android Authority report has found strings of code that reference possible changes to the Play Store “notifying users that an app has been removed and will no longer receive updates.”
This suggests that Google wants to make sure people are aware that the apps they may still be using aren’t going to be updated any further, which could make them risky to continue using. This would certainly be a good change for the ecosystem. As it would allow you to find a replacement app that serves the same needs, provided you would prefer to use an app that is still being updated with new features, stability improvements, and bug and security fixes.
At the moment it’s not clear if Google will push this feature out soon, should it end up getting pushed at all.
