Sony is launching a new feature for the base PS5 and PS5 Slim models called QSSR that will bring enhanced visual fidelity through AI upscaling. It’s similar in nature to the PSSR feature that’s available on the PS5 Pro, though it does differ in some ways and is not as powerful due to the difference in hardware and specs between the two consoles.
That being said, Sony boasts that QSSR will boost image quality and image stability, leading to a better experience on PS5. QSSR, or Quick Spectra Super Resolution, is “hand-tuned to maximize performance on PS5,” Sony says, and was “born from Project Amethyst.” QSSR will be a big boost to those who have any of the base model PS5 consoles, whether that’s an OG model from 2020 or any of the Slim models, or any of the revisions from in between. However, Sony does reiterate that PSSR for the PS5 Pro is still the gold standard of this technology.
The QSSR feature on the PS5 will roll out starting today, and begin with two games
One of the key details Sony mentions with the announcement of this new feature is that QSSR tech will be offered broadly to PlayStation developers. It’ll be up to the developers to implement this technology in their games, and it will not be a fundamental upgrade that will come to every single game.
Additionally, QSSR will be starting with just two games, which are Marvel’s Wolverine, and Ghost Of Yotei. Marvel’s Wolverine is a mere few weeks old, and Ghost Of Yotei just launched the Complete Edition on October 1, which includes the new story expansion and a new single-player-based wave mode. Both of these games also come from internal PlayStation studios.
Sony says the patches for these two games will also start rolling out today.
