Human Error
Tesla’s bid to become the leader in fully autonomous driving vehicles has been tricky. While the rest of the industry has already followed suit and is beginning to develop their own systems, Tesla was one of the first to release it to the world. Unfortunately, first-adopter syndrome hit, and over the years Tesla has taken a beating publicly as it has experienced some ‘hiccups’ with the technology.
Autonomous driving technology has become more accepted with regulators and automakers reaching agreements that will allow the technology to be used under certain conditions. Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (FSD) suite remains one of the best in the business, and just got a new update to improve safety, specifically reducing human error.

FSD v14.3.9
Tesla has just released an update for the FSD system. Specifically called v14.3.9, which now allows the system to take driving control even when the driver is piloting the vehicle. In an X post, Tesla AI explains that the system activates on your behalf when an imminent collision is detected and the automatic braking system (AEB) might not be enough.
In other words, if the FSD system determines that AEB isn’t enough, it takes over and maneuvers the car away from danger. The system might also engage itself if it determines the driver is heavily distracted. According to the report, the system is a step above AEB; in the event that it takes over, the new update will use steering, braking, and acceleration inputs to try to avoid an accident as much as possible.
Last Resort
Tesla does point out that the new update is meant as a last-resort option; if the system engages and takes over, it will immediately alert the driver and request to return to manual driving mode after the emergency situation has been passed safely. While it may sound like an intrusive system, at the very heart of it, the new FSD update adds another protective layer for when the driver is unable to properly react to an impending incident.
