One of the main reasons to look forward to 6G connectivity isn’t necessarily the increase in speeds. Of course, that would be a welcome upgrade. However, a bigger and more exciting reason is that 6G networks are built with AI in mind. But it looks like we won’t have to wait for 6G to experience that. T-Mobile and Ericsson have announced AI-driven optimization running on T-Mobile’s 5G Advanced network.
T-Mobile, Ericsson bring AI optimization to 5G Advanced network
The two companies are running what they’re calling the AI-native Scheduler with Link Adaptation. This is essentially a neural network that runs directly on Ericsson’s hardware and predicts shifting radio conditions in real time. Instead of following fixed rules that have governed how networks schedule and transmit data, the system continuously adapts on the fly.
According to the announcement, trials on the T-Mobile 5G Advanced Ericsson deployment showed nearly 10% better spectral efficiency. It also showed up to 15% faster downlink throughput compared to more traditional rule-based approaches. T-Mobile kicked off the trials early in Q2 2025 and expanded to multiple US markets, including Los Angeles, New York, New Jersey, and Salt Lake City.
What this means for T-Mobile customers
One of the more obvious benefits of this is when the network is under pressure. Better spectral efficiency means the same spectrum goes further, so congested areas during peak hours should feel less sluggish. T-Mobile says customers can expect smoother streaming and more responsive gaming. They should also be able to expect more reliable video calls even when demand is high.
According to Grant Castle, Senior Vice President of RAN Engineering & Emerging Technologies T-Mobile, “Following our milestone as the first U.S. operator to deploy 5G Advanced nationwide in 2025, we’re continuing to push the boundaries of RAN innovation.” He adds, “Our work with Ericsson on AI-native Scheduler with Link Adaptation demonstrates how real-time, AI-driven optimization can enhance spectral efficiency and throughput while delivering a more consistent experience for customers at scale.”
The good news is that T-Mobile customers can look forward to this later this year. A report from Fierce Wireless claims the carrier plans to deploy it in Q3 2026.
