A new report has been released, and this one is rather interesting. It’s based on a study that reveals the most invasive apps out there. Unsurprisingly, Instagram and Facebook are at the very top of the list.
Over 5,000 apps were analyzed to discover the most invasive ones
The study was conducted by IT Asset Management Group (IT-AMG), a certified ITAD firm that specializes in secure IT asset disposal and enterprise-grade IT equipment buyback. Over 5,000 apps were analyzed from the Apple App Store.
The company explains that the apps were selected from a broader list of the top 100 apps in each category. In order to figure out the most invasive apps, the company created an index out of 100 based on 46 indicators, including 35 types of data, six purposes for data collection, and five different types of user relationships.
The level of privacy intrusion was measured by whether each data type is tracked and linked, tracked but not linked or tracked, or not collected at all. Tracked and linked is the most intrusive combo, of course.
5 out of 10 apps on this list are from Meta
As you can see in the table below, Instagram and Facebook top the list, and it’s not even close. Those two apps managed to get an index score of 61.47, both of them.

Grab: Taxi Ride, Food Delivery is third-placed with an index score of 55.57, and it’s followed by three other Meta apps. Threads, Meta Business Suite, and Messenger are fourth, fifth, and sixth, though in reality they all share that fourth place, as all of them have a score of 54.53.
Nordstrom Rack: Shop Deals app is seventh placed with an index score of 53.62, while it’s followed by Pinterest with a score of 50.06. The last app on the top 10 list is AE + Aerie, with a score of 50.01.
