Spotify announced that it will start labeling AI-generated artists with “AI Persona” profile tags, making their nature clear for users. Additionally, Spotify will also exclude AI music from the editorial and algorithmic recommendations. The audio streaming giant notes that the move is part of its broader AI policies for music on the platform.
Spotify will exclude ‘AI Persona’ artists from music recommendations
The goal is to distinguish AI-generated artists from real performers who could lose streams to them. Around mid-September, Spotify users will start seeing “AI Persona’ badges on some artists’ profiles, indicating that the artist’s identity is AI-generated. The company will let artists identify themselves as AI Personas, but says it won’t entirely rely on self-reporting.
Spotify will also review artists’ profiles to find those using photorealistic AI-generated names and images. It will start with artists that meet certain audience thresholds, covering the most-listened-to profiles first. Once labeled, the “AI Persona” badge will appear on the artist’s profile banner and About section, in Search, and next to their tracks in playlists.
As said, Spotify won’t include AI Personas in editorial or algorithmic recommendations by default. Their music also won’t appear in personalized recommendations unless a user follows them.

Artists can appeal
Spotify also says artists can appeal the ‘AI Persona’ label if they believe there’s been a mistake. The company clarifies that AI Persona is a judgement on the artist’s profile, not the music. In the coming months, it will also roll out a tool that lets users report artist profiles they believe are AI Personas but haven’t received a label yet. Spotify says that artists will be able to self-disclose starting on August 11, 2026, through Spotify for Artists. The labels will appear starting next month.
Like its rivals in the music industry, Spotify is trying to balance AI-driven innovations, like Prompted Playlists, AI DJ, and more, while working to prevent the flood of low-quality AI-generated music from taking over the platform. Too much of such content could disrupt the user experience and lead to subscription cancellations.
