There are so many different music streaming services out there right now that we can choose from. But it seems that out of all of them, there is only one king, and that is Spotify. According to the latest figures, Spotify has managed to go past 300 million subscribers for the first time ever.
Spotify now boasts over 300 million subscribers
Spotify claims it now has over 300 million subscribers. The company also managed to reach 777 million monthly active users in the second quarter. This represents a 12% increase from the previous year. Note that we’re talking about actual paid subscribers, so that’s honestly very impressive.
To give you a bit more context, Spotify is the clear leader in the music streaming space. In second place, that spot goes to Tencent Music Entertainment with 127.4 million paid subscribers. Then in third place is YouTube Music & Premium, with 125 million global subscribers. Then in fourth, we have Apple Music with about 108 to 116 million subscribers. Amazon Music comes in fifth place with 78 to 82 million subscribers.
Platforms such as Deezer and TIDAL are very distant competitors, with under 10 million paying subscribers.
Impressive despite setbacks
It’s actually impressive that Spotify grew to over 300 million subscribers. The firm has raised its prices over the years, making it less attractive compared to other services. It also ran into various issues with its app, creating a frustrating experience for users. But despite all that, people are still flocking to it.
It’s not that surprising, though. Spotify has expanded its offerings over the years, going beyond music. The company has introduced AI features, personalized podcasts, and more. This includes fitness content, narration of magazines, selling concert tickets, and physical books, just to name a few.
However, not everyone is particularly happy with Spotify. The rise of AI has led to an increase in AI-generated music. While these AI-generated songs actually don’t sound too bad, it does take the attention away from actual human artists who work hard to write and record their music. Not generate them with a single prompt.
Spotify has since taken steps to appease users by introducing a verification system for artists. They also introduced an optional labeling system for AI-generated music.
