When it comes to smartphone cameras, typically the biggest and “best” sensor is used for the main camera. The main camera is usually also a jack-of-all-trades type of camera. It is usually accompanied by a telephoto and ultrawide camera for more specialized shooting needs. But now, it looks like Sony wants to close that gap with its new LYTIA 610 sensor that could potentially make telephoto cameras much sharper.
Sony debuts new LYTIA 610 sensor
According to Sony’s press release, it has debuted its new LYTIA 610 sensor. Now, the press release is rather technical, but ultimately what Sony is hoping to achieve is to give 1/2-type sensors better performance.
In our smartphones, the telephoto and ultrawide cameras usually use 1/2-type sensors. These tend to be smaller than the main sensor, and usually aren’t as “strong.” By that we mean sometimes you get fewer details and slower autofocus, but it makes up for it by giving users telephoto or ultrawide capabilities.
This is also why it is generally recommended that users use the main sensor to get the best quality images. But with the LYTIA 610, Sony thinks that phones no longer need to compromise. This is done by essentially splitting the job between the red, blue, and green pixels inside of a sensor.
The green pixels get their own individual tiny lens, while the red and blue pixels get grouped in clusters of four sharing one lens. This means the green pixels will prioritize sharpness, while the red and blue pixels improve focus speed. Sony claims this offers a 20% improvement in spatial resolution compared to the company’s previous sensor.
Which phones will get it?
According to Sony, they expect mass production shipments to begin by the end of June 2026. However, the bigger question is, which phones will make use of it? Despite Sony having one foot out the door on the smartphone side of things, the company is still very much involved behind the scenes.
In fact, many phones these days rely on Sony’s sensors. This includes phones made by OPPO, Vivo, and Motorola. Xiaomi was also one of the first to use a Sony 1-inch sensor inside its smartphones. Apple and Sony also have a partnership, where they use Sony’s manufacturing to make their own custom sensors.
Based on this, there’s a good chance future phones from OPPO and Vivo could make use of Sony’s new LYTIA 610 sensor. It’s not a guarantee, but it might be worth looking forward to in the future.
