Sony is rumored to be abandoning its plan to use 32GB of RAM in the upcoming PS6, or at least considering the abandonment of it in favor of keeping the console price low by moving to a lower amount. unless you’ve been living under a rock, then you very likely have seen or heard plenty about the memory crisis. It’s been the main reason for all the price increases on products like phones, laptops, and gaming devices. It’s also been the reason why companies like Valve have had to delay the launch of the Steam Machine.
There has been much speculation that Sony would delay the PS6 to try and avoid these issues, but there have been other rumors stating the opposite. As it could end up costing Sony more money to delay the console than to use more expensive components. This was also well before companies like Samsung have stated that it expects the memory crisis to carry beyond 2027. So, a delay probably wouldn’t be in Sony’s best interest.
With regard to the RAM, past rumors had suggested that Sony was looking to use 32GB of RAM in the PS6, but that appears to be changing, as Sony faces constrained opportunities to use that much without jacking up the price too much.
Sony may abandon 32GB of RAM on the PS6 and bump the amount down to 24GB
While Sony has yet to confirm any specifics about its next console, and this includes RAM, this doesn’t stop rumors from surfacing. According to KeplerL2 over on Neogaf, Sony is potentially looking to bring the RAM down to 24GB instead of using the 32GB that was rumored before.
The reason for this would be a means of keeping the costs down. KeplerL2 says that they believe the only meaningful cutbacks Sony could do on the PS6 are lowering the RAM amount and sticking with a 1TB SSD. Anything else would “defeat the purpose of having a next-gen system.” There’s still a while yet before the PS6 arrives, so there’s a good chance things may change yet again leading up to the eventual announcement. When Sony does officially reveal its next console, it’s rumored to do so with two variations of the console itself, in addition to a handheld.
