Sony just broke its Android update promise for one of its smartphones. The device in question is the Xperia 10 VI, as that phone will not be getting Android 17 after all. The company confirmed as much.
The Sony Xperia 1 VI won’t be getting an Android 17 update, as the company just broke its promise
Sony initially promised “three Android OS upgrades” for this phone, but in a notice on its website, Sony broke that promise. The company is blaming the phone’s “limitation” for that, actually.
The company said that the Xperia 10 VI does not support an Android 17 upgrade experience that Sony considers “adequate”, and the aforementioned “limitation” is related to the phone’s storage.
Sony did say that security updates for the device will continue as planned, though, in case you’re wondering. The company also added: “We recognise that this falls short of our original announcement, and we wish to apologise for this change.”
Sony is blaming the phone’s storage
“This issue is specific to Xperia 10 VI’s technical specifications and will not impact other Xperia models,” Sony added. So if you own any other Sony phone, don’t worry; the promised updates will arrive.
The Sony Xperia 10 VI was announced in 2024 as a mid-range phone from the company. It packs 128GB of storage, which Sony blamed for not delivering Android 17 to the device. This handset came with Android 14 out of the box.
The device is also equipped with the Snapdragon 6 Gen 1 chip, 8GB of RAM, and a 5,000mAh battery. It has a 6.1-inch OLED display with a fullHD+ resolution, while a 48-megapixel main camera is backed by an 8-megapixel ultrawide unit.
This sure is an odd situation, as companies usually fulfill their promised updates. While Sony tried to justify this, the Xperia 10 VI users will likely be disappointed.
