TikTok permanently banned the official promotional account for director Alex Gibney’s new documentary about Elon Musk right as the film expanded to theaters across North America. The social media platform pulled the plug on the movie’s page after alleging severe political policy violations, leaving distributor Bleecker Street scrambling to appeal the decision during a crucial opening weekend.
Vague policy violations during a major theater push
According to The Hollywood Reporter, TikTok notified Bleecker Street on Friday afternoon that a permanent suspension was imminent. TikTok cited political policy violations for removing the account, which had built over 10,000 followers, though the platform failed to specify which exact posts triggered the immediate shutdown.
Before the account disappeared, the team posted a series of short clips promoting the nearly four-hour documentary. In a bizarre twist of irony, one of the final posts urged followers to go see the film in theaters before getting shut down.
Social media ad pushback and platform ties
This account suspension marks a major escalation in an ongoing promotional struggle across major social platforms. Google and Meta initially rejected paid advertisements for the film before reversing course and calling it an error. TikTok and X, meanwhile, have refused to take paid ads for the documentary on repeated occasions.
Industry observers from outlets like Gizmodo also highlighted potential ownership overlaps surrounding the controversy. Oracle co-founder Larry Ellison, who holds a significant stake in TikTok’s U.S. operations, appears in the documentary via text messages offering financial support for Musk’s Twitter takeover.
Bleecker Street appeals the permanent ban
Bleecker Street is actively appealing the suspension, hoping to restore the promotional channel while moviegoers head to theaters. However, losing access to TikTok’s audience during a nationwide theatrical push hits marketing efforts hard, particularly when the distributor planned to boost posts with ad dollars.
TikTok has not publicly responded to requests for comment regarding the specific grounds for the ban. For now, film promoters are relying on word of mouth as the documentary expands across nearly 500 screens.
