Trump’s tariffs have created a huge mess. Prices were increased and products were delayed due to the uncertainty. Ultimately, the US Supreme Court ruled that these tariffs were illegal, but the damage was done. Customers paid more for certain products, and not all of them are getting their money back. Now, it looks like Sony is facing a class action lawsuit over the price hikes.
Sony hit with class action lawsuit over price hikes
In the class action lawsuit filed against Sony, gamers are claiming the company is profiting from the price hikes as a result of the tariffs. These gamers are now seeking refunds for those who bought a PlayStation console during the tariff period where they paid more than before due to the tariffs.
To make matters worse, these gamers are worried about Sony “double-dipping.” You see, as a result of the Supreme Court ruling that these tariffs were illegal, the US Customs and Border Protection set up a tariff refund website. This is where companies could apply to have the tariffs they paid refunded to them. Ideally, these refunds would then be passed back to customers who overpaid for their stuff.
However, the concern gamers have is that not only did Sony “profit” from these increased prices, but they could be double-dipping by keeping these profits while getting a refund from the government. It should be noted that Sony hasn’t done that, but there is the concern that they might.
Sony’s argument for the price hikes back then was due to multiple reasons. This included component shortages, supply chain issues, and other market conditions. It wasn’t just the tariffs. This means that the price hike, at least as far as Sony is concerned, wasn’t due specifically to the tariffs.
Sony’s not alone
If this lawsuit sounds familiar, it’s because Sony isn’t alone in it. Other companies are facing similar accusations. More recently, Amazon was also hit with a class action lawsuit for not refunding customers for the price hikes due to tariffs. Nintendo, Nike, and Adidas are also facing similar lawsuits themselves.
It’s a tricky situation because we’re sure these companies will try and wiggle their way out of this. This is because it’s true that the current economy has made things more expensive. So to blame it entirely on tariffs would be hard to prove. In any case, a refund would go a long way in creating goodwill among customers. Unfortunately, the ball is now in Sony’s court, so hopefully they’ll do the right thing.
