Sony’s strategy of bringing its first-party, narrative PlayStation games to PC will no longer continue, ending its run with releasing some of its most beloved exclusives on the PC platform that started some six years ago. While this is no doubt the right move for Sony, it’s a blow for fans. Many will miss out on what are some of the best games available, and it feels like Sony is leaving money on the table.
The change in strategy for PlayStation Studios was reportedly communicated to staff in a town hall meeting on May 18 by PlayStation Studios head Hermen Hulst. The decision to pull back from PC releases likely comes as a bit of a shock to some but it isn’t all that unsurprising. It was rumored that this would be Sony’s plan going forward back in March. Sony hasn’t confirmed this change yet.
PlayStation games no longer getting PC ports leaves money on the table
Since Sony hasn’t confirmed this change in strategy, there’s no way of knowing why it’s pulling back from bringing its narrative single-player games to PC. Some believe that Sony just didn’t see enough revenue or profit from the endeavor. But one thing to keep in mind is that regardless of the reason, Sony might not ever publicly announce the reason anyway.
It’s possible that this decision could be a response to Microsoft’s next Xbox console also being a PC that runs Windows. It’s also possible that Sony just felt it wasn’t worth porting its games anymore. That being said, bringing its games to PC opened up a door for reaching a massive playerbase of gamers that would likely have never bought a PlayStation console. Releasing the games day and date could also have helped expand that reach. There’s also the chance for the double dip. In releasing a game on PC, Sony no doubt ended up selling the PC version to some that had already bought the game on a PlayStation console.
While this decision to stop PC ports is a bummer, there are still several PlayStation Studios games that are already available on Steam that are excellent games and worth checking out. Sony will also continue to release online games on multiple platforms.
