Apple‘s iOS 27 introduced a clever way to run two iPhones on a single phone number, but staying connected across multiple devices will cost extra. Verizon confirmed it plans to charge $10 per month for the new iPhone Handoff feature, making it the most expensive carrier option in the United States.
How iPhone Handoff works across two devices
The new iOS 27 capability allows users to share one cellular plan between two compatible iPhones, such as a compact foldable iPhone Duo and a flagship iPhone 18 Pro/18 Pro Max. While both devices cannot use the shared line simultaneously, switching active status is as simple as unlocking whichever phone you want to use.
Once unlocked, calls, text messages, Find My tracking, and iCloud backups automatically transfer to your active device. Setup is handled directly inside the iOS Cellular settings menu, though Apple advises keeping passcodes enabled on both phones to prevent unintended device switches.
Carrier pricing double T-Mobile’s rate
Verizon’s $10 monthly rate stands significantly higher than competitor pricing. Currently, T-Mobile charges $5 per month for the exact same feature, while AT&T currently has no immediate plans to support iPhone Handoff at all.
Overseas, European carriers are taking a slightly different approach. Germany’s Deutsche Telekom charges €6.95 per month through its MultiSIM service, while UK provider EE plans to charge £5 monthly unless customers subscribe to its high-tier Full Works Plus plan, where the feature is included for free.
Folding phone hype meets monthly add-ons
The timing of Verizon’s pricing announcement coincides with massive consumer demand for Apple’s $1,999 foldable iPhone Duo. Preorders slipped quickly into late November and December, prompting Apple to boost supply chain orders by nearly 30 percent.
To soften the blow of extra monthly add-ons, carriers are bundling promotional device credits and trade-in deals for users willing to sign multi-year service contracts. Still, for subscribers hoping to seamlessly alternate between a pocketable folding phone and a traditional Pro model, Verizon’s monthly fee adds another recurring expense to an already pricey ecosystem.
