For the longest time ever, gamers had to compromise when it came to monitors. They could either choose a monitor with high-resolution, or they could choose a monitor with a high refresh rate. Now it looks like Samsung has closed that gap by announcing a QD-OLED display that has both a 4K resolution and a 360Hz refresh rate.
Samsung unveils new 4K display with 360Hz refresh rate
According to Samsung, this new 4K display with 360Hz refresh rate is a world’s first. This is because like we said earlier, gamers in the past had to compromise. A lot of times, displays with a 360Hz refresh rate tend to top out at a resolution of 3440×1440. While this is still relatively high-resolution, it’s not quite 4K.
For the most part, it is a decent compromise. But for those who want their cake and eat it too, Samsung’s new display could be it. One of the reasons why this couldn’t be achieved is due to the amount of pixel data that needs to be processed. This puts a heavy burden on the panel’s driving system. Samsung claims they have solved that through optimized panel circuitry.
The company has also introduced a V-Stripe design that aligns red, green, and blue sub-pixels vertically. This is different from the more traditional triangular sub-pixel arrangement used in current QD-OLED technology. This new design is said to improve text edge clarity, making it great for writing, document reading, or coding, not just for gaming. It also addresses one of the main reasons why OLED displays aren’t exactly favored when it comes to productivity.
And just in case 360Hz refresh rate isn’t enough, the display comes with a Dual Mode feature. This allows users to drop the resolution down to FHD, which in turn bumps the refresh rate up to a blazing fast 680Hz. Most people probably won’t need 680Hz, but the option is there for those who do.
When will it arrive?
At this point, it is unclear when these displays will hit the market. As some of you know, Samsung doesn’t just sell their own monitors, they make the panels behind it too. We imagine these panels will eventually find its way into Samsung’s own lineup of monitors, but for now, the company says they’re in discussions with more than 10 global customers. They also say that mass production will kick off in the second half of the year.
There’s no word on pricing yet either, but this will depend on who’s selling these monitors. But we should note that a 4K monitor with a 360Hz refresh rate probably won’t come cheap.
