Samsung Galaxy Watch smartwatches can do a lot of things, and now it looks like Samsung wants to use the Galaxy Watch 8 to help people better monitor changes to their body during the treatment of Ozempic and other GLP-1 medications. While this isn’t something that the watches currently do, it’s something that Samsung is now going to be working on. Though it’s worth noting that Samsung only mentions GLP-1 treatment in general and not any specific variations of said treatment.
Think of it like when Samsung was testing out the Galaxy Watch ecosystem for tracking ECG and other features that are now available on more modern Galaxy Watch models. This also brings up a good point. This is something that will probably take a while to reach a usable status. The ECG and blood pressure monitoring features on Galaxy Watch took quite some time before it was pushed out to users. Now, some of this was due to regulatory stuff. It needed to be approved. But a fair amount of it was also likely development and testing. So, the same thing is most likely going to happen here.
Samsung says it will use the Galaxy Watch 8 to study the rapid muscle loss during GLP-1 use
One of the side effects of using GLP-1 is rapid muscle mass loss, and according to Samsung that’s what it’s going to be studying with this new initiative. GLP-1 medications are intended as treatments for Type-2 Diabetes, but because the side effects include weight loss among loss of appetite, many people have been using it as a treatment for weight loss.
That being said, the rapid loss of muscle mass is part of those side effects and Samsung wants to learn the possible effects of that, and whether or not it could negatively impact users. “This collaboration with MGH focuses on addressing real-world health challenges that patients face during GLP-1RA therapy, specifically managing muscle loss and building healthy habits,” said Samsung’s Head of Health R&D Group at its Mobile eXperience (MX) Business, Jongmin Choi.
Samsung says that it will enroll 100 adults into this study, dividing them into two separate groups to monitor changes. One group will continue treatment without using the Galaxy Watch 8 to monitor biomarkers throughout the treatment.
