A fridge is a relatively straightforward piece of home appliance. It keeps your food cold or frozen. That’s all it really needs to do. But unfortunately in our quest to make everything “smart,” these sort of incidents occur. It turns out Samsung accidentally froze its smart fridges with a software update, and we don’t mean “froze” in the “that’s what a fridge is supposed to do” kind of way either.
Samsung froze its smart fridges in latest update
According to a report from ZDNET Korea, Samsung pushed out a recent update to its smart fridges which froze them. Basically, because of this bad software update, users are claiming that their fridges stopped working, resulting in their food going bad. It also stopped features like the automatic door-opening from working, as well as the fridge’s internal lights.
Samsung has since issued a statement on the company’s forum. The company acknowledges there was an error during the testing process of a software update. They say, “Abnormal symptoms have been observed in the refrigerator power and screen of some customers.” They also state, “We are currently taking emergency measures as a top priority through Samsung Electronics Service Centers.”
What’s alarming is that this software update was still in testing. So the question is, how did it get pushed out to users? It also seems that they might not necessarily be fixable via a software update. Some users claim that Samsung technicians have been replacing motherboards in the affected units.
Bad timing
That being said, the timing of this is rather bad. This is because over in Korea, the country is getting ready to celebrate the Chuseok holidays this Friday. This means that food that was prepared for the event has gone to waste. Unsurprisingly, many customers are asking the company to compensate them for the spoiled food. We’re not sure if Samsung will honor this request, but we hope they do.
In the meantime, this just highlights how sometimes smarter isn’t always better. While these features are nice to have and potentially useful, incidents like this remind us that not everything needs to be given a “brain.”
