Back in May earlier this year, singer Dua Lipa filed a $15 million lawsuit against Samsung. Now, to no one’s surprise, Samsung wants that lawsuit dismissed and is asking the courts to do it.
Samsung wants Dua Lipa lawsuit dismissed
According to the filing obtained by Rolling Stone, Samsung’s lawyers said, “The images merely depict the televisions’ on-screen interface, illustrating the applications and … an example of content available on the TV.” Basically, they’re suggesting that just because Dua Lipa appeared on a product box, it doesn’t mean that she endorses it. However, whether or not the courts decide to dismiss the Samsung Dua Lipa lawsuit remains to be seen.
For those unfamiliar, Dua Lipa filed a lawsuit against Samsung for using her photo without permission. Photos of the popstar appeared on cardboard boxes for Samsung TVs sold in retail stores. According to the singer’s representatives, she owns full rights to the image. She also did not give Samsung permission to use it in any advertising or product packaging.
They also showed a screenshot of a comment from a fan. The fan said they would buy the TV just because Dua Lipa is on it. This seems to go against what Samsung claimed. Which is that just because she’s on the box doesn’t mean she endorses it. However, at least some fans disagree.
Was prior approval granted?
However, Samsung had also previously claimed to have gotten “explicit assurance” from a “content partner” that it had permission to use the image. Samsung said at that time, “Ms. Lipa’s image was used in 2025 to reflect the content of our third-party partners that is available on Samsung TVs and was originally provided by a content partner for our free streaming service Samsung TV Plus.”
They added, “The image was used only after receiving explicit assurance from the content partner that permission had been secured, including for the retail boxes. Given this assurance, we deny any allegations of intentional misuse.”
That being said, this isn’t the first time companies have gotten in trouble for using images or the likeness of a celebrity without permission. Actor Lindsay Lohan sued Rockstar back in 2014, alleging her likeness was used for a character in GTA 5.
