Apple has long relied on companies like Samsung to supply them with display panels used across its products. So, to learn that Samsung could be supplying the display for the foldable iPhone hardly comes as a surprise. But now, a new report out of Korea claims that Samsung has kicked off production of the displays.
Samsung kicks off display production for foldable iPhone
According to the report, Samsung has received approval from Apple to begin production of the display for the foldable iPhone. This is after the company managed to achieve an 80% yield on production, which means that it can produce reasonably consistent enough for Apple’s needs.
Speaking of Apple’s needs, it seems that the company is confident about the success of the device. Apparently, Apple has asked Samsung to produce an initial batch of 3 million OLED panels this year alone. Now, that is quite a staggering figure.Â
For context, when the first Samsung Galaxy Fold launched, the company reportedly produced 20,000 to 30,000 units as its first batch. This was done to test the market’s reaction. Apple jumping straight to 3 million suggests that they are very confident about the device’s ability to succeed.
Of course, the foldable scene has matured a lot since. There are now more players from the likes of Honor, OPPO, Vivo, and Google. But at the same time, the rumored price tag and the fact that it will be Apple’s first foldable means the company isn’t quite in the clear yet. Either way, we’ll have to wait and see.
What can we look forward to?
One of the more unique features of the foldable iPhone is its display. Unlike the majority of foldables we’ve seen, which tend to look more boxy and square-shaped, Apple is going in a different direction. The company will make the foldable iPhone look more like a tablet when unfolded.
As a result, the company is reportedly going with a smaller external display, measuring a little over 5-inches. That is considerably smaller than most smartphones these days. However, it would suggest that Apple envisions most users probably using the internal foldable display more.
Apple was supposed to be the first to tackle this form factor. Samsung is also reportedly hopping on the bandwagon. However, Huawei beat everyone to the punch in April with the Pura X Max.Â
