According to a new report by the Korea Herald, Samsung will be the sole OLED display supplier for the Apple iPhone 18 series. If this ends up being the case, it will be an exception to a rule, kind of.
Samsung could be the sole supplier of iPhone 18 displays
What does that mean? Well, while Samsung has been supplying Apple with OLED displays since the iPhone X, the very first model to use an OLED display, it hasn’t always been the only supplier.
In fact, the only time it was the sole OLED display supplier was for the iPhone X. Apple turned to both LG Display and BOE in the past as well. That’s usually the smart thing to do, to try to mitigate supply chain risks.
When it comes to the iPhone 18 series, Samsung could once again be the sole supplier, though. That series of phones is essentially marking the iPhone’s 20th anniversary.
CEO tech could be the reason why, but… not necessarily
Why is that, though? Well, according to a recent rumor, Apple asked Samsung to develop an OLED panel for the iPhone 18 devices that is polariser-free and curved on all four sides. If that’s true, Samsung used the color filter on encapsulation (COE) tech.
We’re not sure how true that is, though. Quite a few industry insiders claim that such a display is not yet ready for mass production, so… it remains to be seen if there’s any truth to that.
If there is, that could be the reason why Samsung is the sole supplier. If not, well, we’re not really sure why that is. As already mentioned, mitigating supply chain risks is an important factor, so there has to be a reason why Apple went with Samsung exclusively this time around.
Three new iPhones are expected in September
As a reminder, the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, and iPhone Ultra are expected to arrive in September. The iPhone 18 and iPhone Air 2 are tipped to arrive in 2027.
