Google has been open about its efforts to get compatibility working between Quick Share and AirDrop for a while now, and as of today’s Android Show: I/O Edition, that dream is now a reality. Google has officially announced that Quick Share now works with AirDrop, so you can finally tell your extended family to stop bothering you about those photos you all took last Summer.
You’ll be able to share with anyone on any device according to Google. This is a pretty quick and easy process for sharing files. Whether it’s a video you recorded from a family gathering or something a little more exciting, such as a trip you wanted to show people. The problem, if compatibility like this isn’t available, is that it can be a little bit of a hassle to send files between devices. Between Android and iOS, for example, you’re likely looking at having to send a file through links on Google Photos or other cloud storage options. If the file is small enough, you might be able to send it in a message. Quick Share to AirDrop makes things much faster. Of course, there is a caveat.
Quick Share compatibility with AirDrop will start with Pixel phones
As with most things that Google rolls out with Pixel in mind, the Quick Share compatibility with AirDrop and iOS will start with Pixel phones. There’s a silver lining though. Google is already working with partners to get this expanded to other Android phones from different brands. Included in these is Samsung, Oppo, OnePlus, HONOR, Vivo, and Xiaomi.
Google says that devices from these brands will be getting the capability later this year. Unfortunately, it refrains from giving any specific dates. There’s yet another silver lining as well. You will technically still be able to quickly share stuff with iOS devices using a new QR code generation option. Starting today, any Android device can use Quick Share to generate a QR code which you can share with an iOS device immediately. This sharing process happens via the cloud. What’s more is that Google says it’s expanding Quick Share to popular apps, such as WhatsApp, with more on the way.
