Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 is underway. Qualcomm is already working on the flagship chip, and it is set to launch in the coming weeks. Now, new information claims the company is targeting a big artificial intelligence upgrade for the processor. As per the info, the upcoming Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 could bring support for advanced on-device AI agents.

Qualcomm is all set to unveil its next generation of the Snapdragon flagship mobile chip on September 22 at the next Snapdragon Summit. While the official name of the chip remains unknown, online information suggests it would be called the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6. Anyway, it’s hard to trust the company’s naming scheme.
Ahead of the event, Qualcomm has teased a smartphone CPU that can break the 5GHz barrier and a new GPU with improved frame upscaling technology. Its attention has shifted towards the Hexagon NPU. The NPU will handle many of the upcoming advanced AI features on smartphones. The tech giant has particularly highlighted on-device AI, with agents able to understand requests and carry out more complex tasks without constantly depending on remote servers.
Android phones may no longer need to rely on cloud-based AI tools
An important part of the new Hexagon NPU is the Element Accelerator. It’s a dedicated component added alongside the existing scalar, vector, and tensor units. As per the company, the unit is designed to speed up transformer-based AI processing. It will help agents respond faster and reason more efficiently. That’s not all; the firm is also increasing the amount of shared memory available to these processing units.
Basically, due to the new configuration, the phone will be able to keep more information available while an AI task is running. More shared memory directly translates to the NPU retaining more information. Moreover, Qualcomm claims the new NPU can run Mixture-of-Experts models with up to 30 billion parameters. This is significant for the smartphone AI ecosystem. However, let’s wait till the official debut and a preview before concluding anything about the new chipset.
