Apple officially announced the new Apple Watch Ultra 4 and the Apple Watch Series 12 back on September 9, alongside the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone Pro Max, iPhone Duo, and AirPods 5, with the release date for some of these devices not far behind. Pre-orders for the Apple Watch Series 12 began on September 9 as well, save for the Verizon version which goes live on September 12. The other major carriers may start pre-orders on this date as well, but it hasn’t been confirmed by the carriers yet.
As for the official launch, the Apple Watch Series 12 release date is September 18, giving customers one week to get their pre-orders in before the watch starts shipping out.
The Apple Watch Series 12 is packed with AI smarts
AI was a big focus of Apple’s event on September 9, and for the Apple Watch Series 12, the AI, specifically Apple Intelligence, is what powers most of the new features. For example, a new ‘Audio Intelligence’ feature as Apple calls them, is sound recognition. This is intended for people that are either deaf or hard of hearing. When the watch picks up sounds like a doorbell or a car alarm, the wearer will get an alert on the wrist telling them what the sound is.
Another feature powered by Audio Intelligence is the Live Rewind. Say you’re out at a restaurant and the person taking your order rambles things off a little too quickly. You can activate Live Rewind and it’ll capture the last 15 seconds of audio, and then turn it into a text snipped for you to read.
This works in conjunction with Siri Recap, another new feature, which can summarize longer bits of audio and put things into a highly detailed summary with key points. Or there’s the new and improved version of Shazam, which now has the ability to pick up audio of songs that it recognizes automatically, instead of you having to manually ask Shazam to tell you what song is playing. It also throws the song info into a Smart Stack widget.
