Samsung really wants to reduce its reliance on Qualcomm chips, but Qualcomm has other plans. Initially, it was reported that Samsung was going to use the Exynos 2700 in about 50% of all Galaxy S27 shipments next year. Now, we’re hearing that it is not the case.
A major reason is that the Exynos 2700 could be more expensive for Samsung to produce. Though the tipster is not saying that it would be cheaper to use the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6, which is what Samsung is likely going to use in the Galaxy S27. This would be the first time that Samsung has used different Qualcomm chips in its flagship Galaxy S series. The Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro is going in the ‘Ultra’ model.
Apparently, TSMC’s 2nm N2P architecture is superior to Samsung’s second-generation 2nm GAA process. This puts the Exynos 2700 at a distinct disadvantage to Qualcomm’s new chips. On top of this, Samsung’s node is more expensive to manufacture, making it difficult for Samsung to compete with TSMC.
Qualcomm is also using multiple versions of its flagship chip this year, including a binned version, which is what the Galaxy S27 will use. Making it even cheaper for Samsung to use it, instead of the Exynos 2700.
Samsung has to cut corners where it can, thanks to AI
Thanks to AI, Samsung and other OEMs will need to cut corners and find cheaper components where they can. AI has caused a huge RAM crisis in the industry. Which is why we’re seeing price increases almost everywhere. And Samsung has even turned to BOE for the display on the Galaxy S27, instead of using Samsung Display as it always has. Though this is still being tested, but if Samsung does choose BOE, that’s a huge win for BOE and China in general.
The Galaxy S27 series is not expected to be announced until Q1 2027, so there’s still time for plenty more rumors.
