The PS6 is most certainly going to have a graphics improvement over the PS5 and PS5 Pro, but the question at this point is whether or not the graphics improvement will be a huge leap forward. It’s unclear what the difference between the two will be like, but there is always an improvement made and usually in many more places than one.
With regard to the PS6 there have been several rumors about what it would provide gamers. There have also been several rumors regarding launch windows and pricing. The PS6 is slated for a launch sometime between 2027 and 2030. Some rumors maintain it’ll be the end of next year, while others think Sony will push the launch out further. Another recent rumor, this one from Moore’s Law is Dead on YouTube, states that Sony is planning to launch three PS6 generation hardware devices. A less powerful version of the PS6, the main PS6, and a handheld. Moore’s Law is Dead is also now giving some input on the graphics improvement that can be expected with the PS6.
The PS6 will see a graphics improvement over PS5 that includes a 10-fold increase in ray tracing
Ray tracing improvements are not going to be the only upgrade that the PS6 brings in the graphics department, but it will be one of the areas where the PS6 reportedly brings one of the biggest improvements. According to Moore’s Law is Dead, the PS6 will bring a 10-fold increase in ray tracing, in addition to a “multiple magnitudes increase in AI.”
This statement is in response to gaming journalist Destin Legarie, who stated on X that the PS6 won’t be some mega-graphical leap. Instead, he thinks that Sony (and perchance Microsoft) will need to figure out what is going to make these consoles sell beyond just better graphics. There’s a point there to consider. Rumors speculate the cost of next-gen consoles is going to be upwards of $1,000. That is in large part due to the RAM shortage, but in the end it doesn’t matter what the reasons are. Consumers are almost certainly as a majority not going to be keen on spending that much money for a new console. Not if the main selling point is going to be major graphics improvements. That being said, this doesn’t mean there won’t be major graphics improvements. The two do not have to be mutually exclusive.
