Another day, another mountain for Google to climb as it reportedly now faces pressure from the EU to share some of its data with third-party search engines. Naturally, now successful business is going to want to share anything of their own with competitors, so Google is going to be fighting this tooth and nail. That being said, it might not matter in the end. Google’s battles with regulators and other companies in court haven’t exactly gone in the direction of Google’s favor recently, though to be fair, Google’s battle with Epic Games is completely different from what the EU wants Google to do here.
Still, Google’s search engine data is its intellectual property, so it’ll be interesting to see if that’s something that flies with the courts should this whole thing make it that far. Google is arguing that sharing such data with outside parties would put user privacy in harms way. And at a time when online privacy seems to be getting attacked from every angle, Google sharing data that could make that worse wouldn’t really be a good thing. Google may also not have a choice at the end of the day.
The EU wan Google to share search data in to comply with the Digital Markets Act
While Google has confirmed via a state from its Senior Competition Council, Clare Kelly, that it plans to fight these measures, it sounds like it’s going to be an uphill battle. Not necessarily one that Google can’t win, but highly likely that it won’t be one that’s easy to win.
As noted in a recent report from Reuters, the EU wants Google to share this data with third-party search engines to comply with the Digital Markets Act. It was ruled that Google had breached the Digital Markets Act in the early part of 2025. That could give the European Commission an advantage in getting Google to share this information with its competitors.
According to the report, the search data in question would also include data from AI chatbots that also have a search functionality. Which means it could be data from users typed into Google’s search bars physically, and the data from search results where users are tapping Gemini to find the information they’re looking for.
