Imagine if you could use tap to pay on your PlayStation controller to make payments. It doesn’t matter what for. It could be for games, more PlayStation Plus subscription time, or really anything you can buy on your console. This would add convenience to your life if you use things like tap to pay a lot in stores. And it would be an alternative option for people that don’t want to input card details on their console to pay for stuff.
This isn’t some science fiction concept or future dream, but a possible reality that could end up a feature of a near future PlayStation console. A new report indicates that Sony has just filed a patent for something called “video game controller-driven information transfer.” The patent is described as a PlayStation controller that has integrated NFC capabilities, and that this would allow users to tap their phone or credit card on the controller to process payments.
Tap to pay on a PlayStation controller isn’t a guaranteed feature
Since this is still just a patent that Sony has filed there’s no guarantee it will ever end up being a feature implemented in future PlayStation controllers. In addition to that, there’s no way of knowing right now what sorts of payment systems that this would support. Apple Pay and Google Pay would both be options that could support the technology as tap to pay with both of those is already widespread globally.
Google Pay and Apple Pay also both assign new digital card numbers to transactions when you pay, so your actual card information isn’t being displayed at the point of sale. This would be a quick and easy way for parents to do one-off purchases on PlayStation consoles for their kids. Sony says that this system could be used for games, PlayStation Store credits (wallet funds), DLC, and other store items.
